Puff Stuff

Ever since I could remember I've had puffed wheat cake over and over, and it's been one of my favorites since I can remember, but the recipe I've always known had two versions and I'd only ever had one. So last night I decided to try the other, which is esentially the cocoa-free version, and since Dustin isn't supposed to have caffiene I thought it would be great to try it out.

Both recipes are made the same way but the cocoa-free version does seem to stay softer longer, which is great to eat, but also means it doesn't hold it's shape quite as well. Though I suspect part of my problem was that I didn't pack it down into the dish like you normally would. I made a pie plate full, then a few shapes of puffed wheat cake, since I never seem to get around to using these mini silicone cake pans/molds that my friend gave me two years ago for my birthday.

Anyways, overall the second version came out tasting quite yummy, which always makes me happy to add another recipe to my success list.

Cookies From A Cake Mix?

I don't believe I posted about the old magazines I found...I suppose that was before I made this blog, but while our family was going through a great many boxes of papers and things that were hidden away in the basement of what was once our old hotel there were old magazines that were my Gramma's back in the day. Needless to say, she really didn't care much about them, so mine they became. Much to my excitement. I've been looking through (over and over) the magazines, scanning, uploading them to flickr. I came across this Duncan Hines cake mix ad and was inspired to try these cake mix cookies. I went onto and found a cake mix recipe that seemed to be highly rated, and made it myself. How did they turn out? They tasted great, and I think they looked quite nifty as well. Next time I think I can make them a little more uniform and interesting, different colors, perhaps some confetti. The great thing about the recipe is that you can use pretty much any cake mix and get a different cookie every time. I'll definitely be trying this again, with a new kind of cake mix.

A simple and lovely treat, worth a try I'd say.

For a few days now I've had a dreadful cough, I don't believe I've ever had a cough like this before. Needless to say, I've been a bit under the weather so it's been hard to get a lot of work done without stopping to have these, almost like, cough attacks. I've been trying to rest, relax, drink lots of fluids, the usual things your supposed to do when your feeling less than 100%.

Anyways, I've been struck by a bit of boredom in the midst of all the coughing. I keep looking at all my old finds, old magazines, and realized I've never taken any photos of some pieces. Some very special ones.

For as long as I can remember we've had a dish set hanging around. When I was young I never thought anything of it, to me they were just dishes, nothing to be given any thought. These days I cherish them. They were once my Great Gramma Cornish's. My Gramma told me about how she got them at the theater, one piece every time she attended. Yep, the theater. I guess she went a lot because there is quite the set. She used these every day but still look absolutely beautiful. It would be great to find out what theater she went to to get these, perhaps my Gramma will know.

These days they remain in a box in the basement until I get my own place, then they will be used for special occasions.

Despite my dislike of Valentines day I decided to upload a few snippets from a booklet of Valentine cards that has been hanging around for pretty much as long as I remember. The booklet says 1980, Metropolitan Card Company. So I picked out a few of my favorites, ones I felt most relevant to myself and my fella. So here we go..

A Valentine Of Sorts

I've personally never been a fan of Valentines day, not because I've been single but simply because I don't understand. I realize it's about celebrating love but what I don't understand is why you need a day to celebrate it when you should be doing that every day. It's so much more special to pick a random day to surprise your sweetie with sweet nothings, rather than when it's come to be expected.

My fella wanted an Atari shirt and I had ordered it from ebay. He knew about it so it wasn't a crazy big surprise that he was getting it, but he hadn't realized it came in the mail already. So I wrapped up the shirt and surprised him with it today.

Goodness me, it's been far too long since my last post. Please forgive me.
I've been keeping fairly busy, but I'd really like to be posting more, taking more photos, and doing more crafty things, apart from my sewing.

It was my 22nd birthday yesterday and overall it was a pretty nice day. For the first time, I think ever, it was beautiful outside! 40F for a February day is pretty insane for little ol' Manitoba, and I couldn't have been happier about it...for the most part anyways.

As per usual, I wanted to decorate for my birthday. Nothing too elaborate, just a few little paper crafts and some re-use of last years ideas. I cut out and strung some paper bunting along the arch between our living and dining room as well as above the big window, in front of the TV stand, and on these caribou antlers of my Dad's (which I generally dislike). It gave the room a bit of fun color, which made me happy.

My darling fella gave me white go go boots for my birthday, which I knew about prior but that's ok, so I made a dress to go with them. I've seen numerous times a lovely black and white colorblock design dress, which for me screamed 60's go go girl. Needless to say I was inspired by it and made my own.

The day was quite relaxed, I happily was home for the day. Gramma made a ham dinner for us, which was actually great since I don't think I could have made anything myself that day. No one really communicated on the dessert part of the day and I ended up with a big store bought cake from Dad, a pumpkin pie and dainties from Gramma, and a homemade cake from my boyfriend's Mom. She added little marshmallow daisies (since daisies are my favorite) and dark blue icing that was supposed to be purple to match my hair, but didn't quite work out. It was lovely.
My Dad worked that night, so it was just the fella, Dustin, and I. We snuggled on the couch and watched movies. It was perfect, in my opinion, and made the day perfect :)

I will be trying to keep up better with this blog as well as my flickr account. So here's hoping I stick with it.
